Happy 2024, everyone!
If we're friends on IG, you know I have three great creating loves: knitting, gardening, and sewing. These three activities have been part of most of my life and my favorite way of self-expression. There's something so satisfying in starting something by hand, investing time and effort in it, letting it develop, and enjoying the fruits of labor.
Gardening has always come naturally (no pun intended) to me. I like to believe I inherited my interest for plants from my Tata, my paternal grandfather, who was an agronomer and adored plants and animals. He even had a flower show on Chilean tv in the 60s!
Knitting was a gift from my paternal grandmother, my Mama ("as in mamma"). She was an avid knitter and taught me the basics when I was a small child. Knitting really took off in college and today I have a couple of published designs, which you can read about in these blog entries: Atacama Nights vPoncho and Dots and Lines cowl.
Unlike gardening and knitting, sewing has been an interest that I've delved into with fear. Cutting fabric is just so permanent, I can't nurture it back, like you do with plants when they're ill, or unravel it, like you do with a frogged knitting project. That hesitancy has definitely held back my skills...
...Until 2024! Last year I had the goal of using up my yarn and fabric stashes for my projects. I was pretty successful and knitted and sewed a good amount of projects. In all honesty, though, I think Max's arrival in April was the true reason for my 2023 sewing mojo. I simply didn't have as much time to knit but still wanted to make.
So, this year I have decided to continue using up my yarn and fabric stashes and sew more. To keep myself accountable, I began my new YouTube channel My Making Journey and posted my first entry last night. This channel will be a creative diary for all my knitting and sewing endeavors, and I'll be able to share their processes more in depth than on IG. Si somos amigos en IG, sabrás que tengo tres grandes amores creativos: tejer, jardinear y coser. Estas actividades me han acompañado desde temprana edad y son mi forma favorita de expresarme. Hay algo muy satisfactorio en empezar algo con tus propias manos, desarrollarlo con esfuerzo y tiempo y luego disfrutar los frutos de ese trabajo.
Jardinear siempre se me dio fácilmente. Me gusta pensar que heredé mi interés por las plantas del Tata, mi abuelo paterno, quien fue agrónomo y gran amante de plantas y animales. ¡Hasta tuvo un programa de flores en la tv chilena de los 60!
Tejer fue un regalo de mi abuela paterna, la Mama (con acento en la 1ra sÃlaba). Ella era una gran tejedora y me enseñó lo básico cuando yo era pequeña. El tejido se desarrolló fluidamente durante mis años universitarios y hoy tengo un par de patrones publicados. Puedes verlos en estos blogs: Tapado Noches de Atacama y Cuello Puntos y LÃneas.
La costura ha tenido una trayectoria distinta; ha sido un interés frenado por el temor. Y es que el cortar género es permanente. No puedes cuidarlo y nutrirlo, como lo harÃas con una planta enferma, ni deshacerlo, como se hace con el tejido cuando queda mal. Esa vacilación ha frenado el desarrollo de mis habilidades costureras...
...¡Hasta este 2024! El año pasado tuve como objetivo usar la lana y los géneros que ya tenÃa en casa para mis proyectos. Tuve bastante éxito y pude tejer y coser varias cosas. Pero, siendo honesta, creo que la llegada de Max en abril fue lo que gatilló que cosiera más: simplemente no tenÃa tanto tiempo para tejer como antes.
Este año quiero continuar usando lo que ya tengo en casa y seguir cosiendo más. Para ayudarme a mantenerme enfocada, empecé el canal de Youtube My Making Journey (Mi Camino Creativo) y subà mi primer vlog anoche. Este canal será mi diario creativo para mis proyectos de tejido y costura y podré compartir sus procesos de manera más profunda que en IG
